***Warning*** Please don’t read this post if you have not read Broken (Book 1 Broken Series) as this blog post does contain a spoiler***
Broken was meant to be a stand-alone novel. As I wrote the words “The End” I was happy that the story I had weaved around Abbey and Cole was complete and I was finished. However, I also knew, as I typed those words on my laptop, I was going to write more stories; I wasn’t finished, it wasn’t “The End” of my writing journey. I had so many ideas I just needed to choose which one to start on next.
As I gave this some thought, my mind kept drifting back to Abbey and Cole. I had loved writing their story and I felt a deep connection to both characters and selfishly I felt I couldn’t let them go just yet. I began to wonder what would happen to Abbey after the story ended. My mind began to daydream about the possible routes her life would take. I took the decision to continue writing Abbey’s story, although I had no idea how it would actually end. I just wanted to live, through my words, Abbey’s life after Cole died. I wanted to explore how she would feel about what had happened, how it would affect her and what she would do next.
I wanted to write a book about Abbeys journey and how to find the courage to live again after such tragedy. Would she revert back to her default behaviour, give in, hide away in the shadows again or would she fight? Would she actually live or would she find living too hard and choose death herself? Would she want to know what drove Cole to such desperate actions? Would she unlock his secrets? Would she meet his family? How about her relationship with her mother? What life would she choose for herself after Cole? So many options, so many paths Abbey could choose, ones that could lead her literally anywhere. There was certainly more than enough to write and with a few plot twists thrown in Shattered was conceived.
Shattered is Abbey’s story after Cole died. It actually takes up right where the first book finishes and is told from Abbeys point of view only.
It is an emotional, turbulent, heart wrenching tale as Abbey tries to come to terms with what happened. As my proofreader Chrissy states:
“Shattered broke my heart…Her journey through the grief just ripped out my heart…Very powerful and emotional.”
And then there is Ty…
He was Cole’s best friend, although they weren’t talking prior to his death and I knew he too would also be affected by Cole’s death, devastated by what Cole did and the guilt he must have felt over the fact he wasn’t there for his best friend, when he needed him most. How would he come to terms with what had happened? What would he do next? What would his relationship with Abbey be like after? Would he actually want anything to do with Abbey after he discovers what she did with Cole? Or would he need the connection to someone else who loved Cole, to come to terms with his own grief?
In Shattered you will get to know Ty better through his interactions with Abbey as he becomes the friend Abbey so desperately needs.
