Writing a Book Blurb (fiction)

Writing Blog

A book blurb is usually found on the back cover of a book. It provides a short description of the story inside. Usually, it is the final decider, after choosing the genre and liking the book cover image, that finally pushes the reader over the edge and into the book. For a fiction writer, the back book blurb is essential to set the scene, introduce the characters and create intrigue. The blurb will engage the reader and make them so curious about the story, that they feel compelled to purchase the book. A great back book blurb is a writers very own marketing tool, therefore getting it right is essential.

“Introduce your main character, establish the primary conflict, lay out the stakes and let fans of the genre see that the book is for them.”

Simple, right? Well it is not as easy as it sounds, a writer only has a maximum of 200 words to do all this.

What should be in a book blurb?

  • A book blurb should set the scene, introduce the plot, story, and the main characters.
  • Introduce the hook, without giving away the ending or the best bits.  The blurb should build up the story to that climatic point and then leave the reader there, wondering what will happen next, so much so, that they will read the book!
  • Relatable characters. Be sure to highlighting their key traits, who they are and what will endear the reader to the character, perhaps it’s a relatable flaw, imperfection, or their personality.

“Consciously or not, readers check out the (blurb) to see whether they want to spend time with your main characters.”

  • Expound on the excitement, drama, or conflict, whatever is at the heart of the story, so readers become quickly invested in the story.
  • Include enough detail and intrigue so the reader becomes invested in the characters, the situation, and the plot.
  • It should be short and sweet, punchy and to the point because a blurb can only be between 150 – 200 words.

Everyone reads a back book blurb, so it is important to have a great one.

“The real secret to a great blurb is to know your audience. Write it with the reader’s desires in mind.”
