Where do you Like to Read?

Everyone has their preferred places to read, sometimes even a favourite time of day or season. Everyone who likes to read has their habits, those times and places where reading fills up a gap in their day or is genuinely pursued over a number of hours for pleasure with the paraphernalia to go with it!

Whether a quiet few minutes at home, locked in the bathroom or hidden away in the bedroom. A snatched hour or scheduled time at the weekend or in the evenings. Moments where peace and quiet reign, where a book can be enjoyed with a steaming hot cup of tea or coffee, (perhaps a glass or wine) some favourite biscuits or chocolate. Wherever it may be, for many it is ‘me time,’ and involves indulging in a past time pleasure.

Generally, most people like to read in a place where there is silence and if not completely quiet, at the very least minimum distraction. Libraries are an ideal location.

Nature is a natural choice: the back garden, the park, the beach or on holiday lying in a hammock, or on a sunbed. The birds chirping in the background, the sound of a distant lawn mower, the wind blowing gently through the trees, the sound of the waves on the seashore.

“For me, a holiday is about taking a book and going to a mountain and reading.” Sonam Kapoor

At home, stretched out on the sofa, in a comfy chair or in bed (one of my very favourite places). Some even create a space in their homes where they can pursue their favourite past time.

“All good and true book – lovers practice the pleasing and improving avocation of reading in bed … No book can be appreciated until it has been slept with and dreamed over.” Eugene Field

I often go to sleep with the thoughts of a story on my mind, imagining where the author will take the story next. Sometimes I am reluctant to leave it and will read to the early hours of the morning, or if it is too late and I have to stop, I am left wondering what happens next as I drift into sleep.

However, some places are full of distractions, but still we can slip away by taking our mind away from the mundane and focus instead on a fantasy world. Long journeys by train, bus, car, or plane provide an excellent opportunity to get stuck into a good book. I read so many books on my commute to work, it was a way to escape my boring reality.

“I love the solitude of being on a plane and finally getting to read an entire book and being left alone.” Christina Ricci

Other journeys provide opportunities where we can stop for some time. We can read at the bus station, in coffee shops with our favourite beverages, at a bar or a lounge.

Reading a book while travelling is a journey inward and outward.” – Bhargav Maddi

Reading is a joy wherever you enjoy doing it and most people have a number of places where they read, especially when they have time on their hands. I think this is the most important consideration for a reader, regardless of the location.
