I had tried unsuccessfully to get into this book before, but last week with nothing else to read I decided to give it another go. No fault of the book, but it reminded me of two other books I had read with similar themes and I couldn’t help drawing parallels between the stories. I wondered if I wanted to read another girl meets boy story, I am so glad I persevered.
So, the girl travels to a new town with her mum and brother. Girl meets her neighbour, the boy and there is an instant attraction, then there is the obstacle. The story is a slow build but when it grabs you, it drags you on an emotional story with a plot twist, that is so unexpected, you become emotionally committed to the story and must read it till the end. The writing is phenomenal; raw, antsy, emotional, and heart felt. I cried during the book (a couple of times), not even waiting for the end. The story is so engaging, the truth so relatable that it made my heart bleed. This book grabbed hold of my heart and twisted it in knots. No wonder as a self-published debut novel it made it onto the New York Times Best Seller list.
Sometimes, its worth giving a book a second chance.
